01 / WHAT MAYHEM IS

A PARTY FIRST.
A COLLECTIVE
BY ACCIDENT.

Mayhem has been running for 8 years. The crew changed. The point didn't.

It started as a French student collective around Leamington and Coventry. I joined later, then ran it for three years. Each year brought a different crew and a different crowd, so the music kept moving too.

We did clubs, rooftops, basements, bedrooms, gardens and forests. Some nights were carefully booked. Others were a generator, a location drop and a race to get the sound working before people arrived.

The best ones felt slightly out of control but never anonymous: friends bringing friends, DJs playing to the room they were actually in, the afters becoming half the story.

There was never a Mayhem sound. French groove, raw techno, trance, makina, free-party music, hard and bouncy techno, finally hypnotic techno. Community came first. The rest was whatever the night needed.
